Abstract text:

THE LOGIC BY ITSELF

Sometimes you think

how a theory, in order to be respected,

you’ll have to endow it with a strong logic,

so that it will not be unsettled…

But a theory that holds up

can, and only by the logic’s incredible power,

not to let life run free.

Logic, by itself,

has not some kind of ethos.

And this is an incredible trap,

if you leave it alone to dictate

and you follow it.

(extract from: “Skylights”)

The rhetoric of the ruins

The view of the ruins, elliptical itself, seems to outline what now, as intact, does not exist. But the rhetorical efficiency of their image-for this very reason-may be more suggestive. Each ruin unwittingly “idealizes” an art form, and in this function, it then participates in the aestheticization not only of the “then” time, but also of the “present” time. This is even further reinforced when, later, ruin and space are ‘co-painted’ or ‘co-photographed’ in relation to a certain place, or consists of, as a unified whole, a literary or musical-theatrical work (anticipating the…Wagnerian conception!). Within this Gesamtkunstwerk, ruins and sites are “sacralized” (in this technical sense of the term) and thus now are artistically protected from any questioning. Not infrequently, therefore, the specific sites are thus also catapulted, transformed into historical landscapes or symbolic compositions, so that the idealized “things” are the perpetuation not only of one aspect but of a view, a scenic or musical memory. In this sense, the ruin participates in the aestheticization of history as an innocent image. The influence of the image, not just of the ruin, but of the ruinous rendering of reality as a sense, for example, of a fuzzy nature, finds, perhaps, in painting one of its most subtle fields of application.

The usurpation of the forms

The established things of the world, or those still considered as such, bring with them glory and honor. A prestige unassailable accompanies them and they are preserved intact in our consciousness.

But they provoke the admiration of the “foreigners”, and give rise to profane ideas in their minds. And now they want to present them, in order to make them appear as their own works.

Usurped from their own places and times, dragged out of their nobility, the monuments are now parallaxed, projecting them with other intentions.

For other different purposes they set them up again, and from their style they keep only what they can soothe their arms.
