GIANNAKOPOULOS CHARALAMPOS

Charálampos Giannakópoulos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1971. He studied at the School of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and works as a secondary-education philologist.

For two years, he also contributed to the organisation and operation of School Libraries in Greece. Alongside his literary writing and translations of foreign poets and prose writers, he publishes regularly articles and essays on literature and the art of reading.

He is currently translating Homer’s Odyssey into Modern Greek.

I

Once you have heard it—
the sound a human being makes
when they crack,

you become a poet.

 

II

He wanted to hear
the sound a wound makes
when it heals.

That is how he survived.

 

III

The sound a volume’s spine makes when it breaks
as you open it
turns every book into a book of poems.
